internet

In rural Africa, with limited telecommunication infrastructure the internet consists of printouts.

If you want to look something up, you tell a guy (let’s call him Google) and he gets on his bicycle, rides into the city, looks it up on the internets, prints it out, then brings the printout back to you…

happy fun (zombie) time

I know that Moral Flexibility’s not doing much with the zombie thing anymore, but last week at SXSW interactive I met the guys behind Lost Zombies a “Community Generated Zombie Documentary” and immediately thought of him and the Zombie Squad.

Looks like a really fun project!

Riding Makes You Smarter

The scientist who invented “Brain Age,” a popular mental training game for the Nintendo DS, has discovered that riding motorcycles can improve cognitive function. Ryuta Kawashima partnered with Yamaha Japan and Tohoku University to study the effects of motorcycle riding on middle-aged men, finding, “In a convenient and easy environment, the human mind and body get used to setting the hurdle low. Our final conclusion is that riding motorcycles can lead to smart ageing.”

On a related note, my bike should arrive with the movers momentarily. YAY!

the gates of hell

In 1971, during a drilling, geologists accidentally found an underground cavern filled with natural gas. The ground on which the drilling rig was placed collapsed, leaving a large gaping hole exposed with a diameter of about 50-100 meters. To avoid poisonous gases coming out of the hole, it was decided to let the gases burn. As of 2009, gases in the underground cavern are still burning without interruption. Locals have named the cavern The Door to Hell.

Happy New year

This year is a big one around here… it’s the year we move from the state of TaxUs to Texas.
Interesting aside: As I understand it, the Republic State of Texas’ constitution forbids both an income tax as well as requiring a balanced budget.

There are of course some other side benefits not available here in New York.

Here’s to a happy, healthy and prosperous 2009 for y’all.
