Unaware of the recording, Detective Christopher Perino testified in April that the suspect “wasn’t questioned” about a shooting in the Bronx, a criminal complaint said. But then the defense confronted the detective with a transcript it said proved he had spent more than an hour unsuccessfully trying to persuade Erik Crespo to confess—at times with vulgar tactics.
Once the transcript was revealed in court, prosecutors asked for a recess, defense attorney Mark DeMarco said. The detective was pulled from the witness stand and advised to get a lawyer.
one has to wonder how often the detective had gotten away with similar tactics in the past.
there may be more to this story than is presented in this article, but at least at face value, this is maddening.
In an interview Monday, Voinovich would not address her comments, first saying she didn’t remember the incident, then demanding a copy of the recording and finally insisting that she could not talk about a student’s discipline.
The circumstances of the boy’s suspension itself raise troubling questions about student discipline, interrogation and oversight at Abraham Lincoln.
According to school officials, the boy made a statement about “brown people” to another elementary student with whom he was having a conflict. They maintain it was his second offense using the phrase.
But the tape recording indicates this only came out after another parent was allowed to question the boy and elicited from him the statement that he “doesn’t cooperate with brown people.”
Billboards and SEPTA bus ads for the movie “Hitman” went up a few weeks ago. They show a man pointing a gun, with a nearly naked woman draped over him.
…
The mayor made some calls, asking that the billboards be taken down. SEPTA says the contracts were up anyway. But the billboard company, Clear Channel Outdoor, says it started taking them down before the contracts were up. It naturally doesn’t want to broadcast this, since its business is keeping advertisers happy.
Philly’s been a sh*thole since long before this bad movie based on an even worse video game was conceived, and will be long after…
Yet another reason to love Ewan McGregor. As if Long Way Round and Shallow Grave weren’t enough.
Ewan McGregor said he is sick of Britain’s “ludicrous nanny state” rules, which he said might force him to quit the country, in an interview to be published Tuesday.
Health and safety regulations were becoming “insane”, the 36-year-old film star told the weekly Radio Times magazine.
The Scottish actor, who played the young Obi-Wan Kenobi in the most recent Star Wars trilogy, blasted the rise of security cameras and London’s congestion charge, which forces drivers to pay to enter the city centre.
McGregor recently completed a 15,000-mile (24,000-kilometre) motorcycle adventure, riding the length of Africa with best friend and fellow actor Charley Boorman.
“Our trip opened my eyes to how insane the rules are in Britain — CCTV cameras everywhere, congestion charge — a ludicrous nanny state.
Personally I can’t wait till Long Way Down

In the West Midlands, the owner of The Staffordshire Knot pub was fined even though he could prove himself innocent of speeding. Stephen Gittus, 39, parked his Kia outside of his establishment on the date and time that a notice he received in the mail claimed his car was hurtling through Wolverhampton at 40 MPH in a 30 MPH zone on Willenhall Road. Several witnesses confirmed that Gittus was playing darts in a crowd of thirty patrons at around 10pm on the date in question.
Last Tuesday, however, Wolverhampton Magistrates Court dropped the speeding charge but did not care that Gittus was innocent. Instead, they imposed three license demerit points and a £420 (US $840) fine on him for “failing to supply information to police” regarding the ticket. Section 172 of the Road Traffic Offenders Act requires motorists to identify the driver of a vehicle accused of speeding, even if the vehicle in question was parked at the time.

so, i’m walking to the subway last night and in front of the Grand Lodge of the Freemasons (off 23rd & 6th ave) there are 5-7 people with signs promoting “Gun Owners for Ron Paul“.
In Manhattan!
Until I got home and checked the web, I wasn’t sure if this was from actual Paul-ites or from people trying to make him look unacceptable to lefties, but it looks legit.
ridiculously sized pic of the flyer below.

Xavier has a post that you have to read.
I had 23 [junk] guns to turn in and didn’t want to take them all in at once as I expected that would raise suspicions. So I decided to visit three or more turn-in locations to “spread” things out. You know, take five or so into each location until I ran out of guns or they ran out of [$100] credit cards.
just about every gunnie has thought about it, someone actually did it.
