PLANTATION, Fla. — A retired United States Marine disrupted a robbery in progress when he shot two men who attempted to rob a Subway sandwich shop, fatally wounding one of them, police said.
According to Plantation police, two armed men barged into the Subway at 1949 Pine Island Road shortly after 11 p.m. Wednesday, demanding money from the employee behind the counter. When they tried to force John Lovell into the bathroom, he pulled out a gun and shot both men, police said.
Donicio Arrindell, 22, was shot in the head and later died at the hospital. Fredrick Gadson, 21, was shot in the chest and ran from the Subway, but police found him in hiding in some bushes on the property of a nearby BankAtlantic.
Lovell, 71, was the lone customer at the time. Police said he had a concealed weapons permit.
A witness who was about to enter the Subway at the time said he thought the shootings were justified.
“I think justice, you know, was served and a civilian was a hero for today,” Sebastian Shakespeare said.
Police said Lovell, a retired Marine, wouldn’t be charged.
so Mayor Bloomie wants to start charging drivers $8 a day to enter (what everyone in brooklyn calls) the city (manhattan below 96th street). while i generally don’t think that this it’s the .gov’s job, i would like to propose a modest compromise that may help to ease congestion. bring back the motorcycle (and scooter for you hip kids) parking. it works pretty damn good in italia, and even frogland (or at least it did until the commies of paris started cracking down on 2 wheelers and implemented, suprise suprise, congestion taxes for the cages).
BEIJING: Raisins and health supplements imported from the United States failed to meet Chinese safety standards and have been returned or destroyed, the country’s food safety agency said Friday.
The move comes as China itself faces international criticism, especially in the United States, over a series of scandals that have plagued Chinese food, drugs and other products from poisoned cough syrup to tainted toothpaste and pet food.
…
In recent months, U.S. inspectors have banned or turned away a growing number of Chinese exports, including monkfish containing life-threatening levels of pufferfish toxins, drug-laced frozen eel and juice made with unsafe color additives.
State Senator Andrew Lanza last week introduced S5941, which would make it a class E felony to sell or rent to minors any game including “depictions of depraved violence and indecent images.”
The bill defines depraved violence as “any photographic, photorealistic, or other similar visual representation of the rape, dismemberment, physical torture, mutilation, or evisceration of a human body.” Indecent images would be any such visual representation “of a person or a portion of the human body which depicts nudity, sexual conduct, or sadomasochistic abuse and which is harmful to minors.”
Are you F’ing kidding me!? A FELONY? I know that in just 5 more years this won’t matter anymore but, damn, a felony? I know it’s already lost all meaning, but seriously…
OTTAWA (Reuters) - A Canadian hitchhiker, who stole an elderly man’s car after he offered her a ride, died a few minutes later when she lost control of the vehicle and crashed into trees, police said.
The crash happened near the town of Hawkesbury — about 100 km (60 miles) northeast of Ottawa — after the man stopped to pick up 20-year-old Mandy Deschambeault.
“The male driver proceeded to step out of his vehicle momentarily at which point the female jumped in the driver seat, stealing the male person’s car,” local police said in a statement Monday.
“She proceeded to lose control of the … car, crossing the other lane hitting trees. The female was ejected from the vehicle and found to be without vital signs.”
Deschambeault was pronounced dead in hospital.
for the record, my wife has flown three times, twice internationally, with a pocket knife in her purse (accidentially), tho I’m pretty sure this takes the cake.
A New Brunswick woman is wondering how she made it through Saint John Airport security and all the way to Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont., with a live cat in her suitcase.
Mary Martell discovered Ginger, the family pet, in her luggage after a two-hour plane ride to Toronto and an hour’s drive to Niagara-on-the-Lake. The cat apparently snuck into a bag while Martell was packing.
Martell said her bag was scanned at the airport, but she was not stopped.
Yeah, Sunshine week has just finished.
But you can try an FOI request to get access to what the .gov knows.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A federal appeals court overturned the District of Columbia’s long- standing handgun ban Friday, rejecting the city’s argument that the Second Amendment right to bear arms applied only to militias.
In a 2-1 decision, the judges held that the activities protected by the Second Amendment “are not limited to militia service, nor is an individual’s enjoyment of the right contingent” on enrollment in a militia.
The ban on owning handguns went into effect in 1976.
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit also threw out the district’s requirement that registered firearms be kept unloaded, disassembled and under trigger lock.

PHOENIX — It’s still going to be legal in Arizona for trucks to have splash guards with racist terms and silhouettes of naked women.
The state House on Thursday rejected a Democratic amendment that would have banned splash guards with images that are “obscene or hateful.”
“I personally am tired of explaining to my 11-year-old son why they (women) are depicted on mudflaps , but not all women are 36Ds. He’s very confused by that,” Ulmer said.
How awful that the representative would have to, you know, actually parent…
