Heston’s Legacy

Whatever his motives, whatever underpinned his passion for guns, Charlton Heston, in demanding equal treatment for blacks in the 1950s and later calling for everyone to have the right to bear arms, was a better representative of the spirit of American equality than any of those gun control campaigners who turned him into their favourite redneck whipping boy. You don’t have to be a friend of the NRA or a supporter of the senseless shootings in America’s poorer communities to oppose gun control. You just have to have some healthy trust in the American people and some healthy distrust of the American state - both qualities that liberals in America and Europe seem to lack today.

on the issues Obama

Principles that Obama supports on gun issues:

  • Ban the sale or transfer of all forms of semi-automatic weapons.
  • Increase state restrictions on the purchase and possession of firearms.
  • Require manufacturers to provide child-safety locks with firearms.

IN A CITY with a real-life gun problem, ads glorifying gun violence to sell movies can be particularly sickening. So we’re glad to report that some in City Hall are taking it personally and saying, “Enough is enough.”

Billboards and SEPTA bus ads for the movie “Hitman” went up a few weeks ago. They show a man pointing a gun, with a nearly naked woman draped over him.

The mayor made some calls, asking that the billboards be taken down. SEPTA says the contracts were up anyway. But the billboard company, Clear Channel Outdoor, says it started taking them down before the contracts were up. It naturally doesn’t want to broadcast this, since its business is keeping advertisers happy.

Philly’s been a sh*thole since long before this bad movie based on an even worse video game was conceived, and will be long after…

the windy city, blows

Xavier has a post that you have to read.

I had 23 [junk] guns to turn in and didn’t want to take them all in at once as I expected that would raise suspicions. So I decided to visit three or more turn-in locations to “spread” things out. You know, take five or so into each location until I ran out of guns or they ran out of [$100] credit cards.

just about every gunnie has thought about it, someone actually did it.

PLANTATION, Fla. — A retired United States Marine disrupted a robbery in progress when he shot two men who attempted to rob a Subway sandwich shop, fatally wounding one of them, police said.

According to Plantation police, two armed men barged into the Subway at 1949 Pine Island Road shortly after 11 p.m. Wednesday, demanding money from the employee behind the counter. When they tried to force John Lovell into the bathroom, he pulled out a gun and shot both men, police said.

Donicio Arrindell, 22, was shot in the head and later died at the hospital. Fredrick Gadson, 21, was shot in the chest and ran from the Subway, but police found him in hiding in some bushes on the property of a nearby BankAtlantic.

Lovell, 71, was the lone customer at the time. Police said he had a concealed weapons permit.

A witness who was about to enter the Subway at the time said he thought the shootings were justified.

“I think justice, you know, was served and a civilian was a hero for today,” Sebastian Shakespeare said.

Police said Lovell, a retired Marine, wouldn’t be charged.

OTTAWA (Reuters) - A Canadian hitchhiker, who stole an elderly man’s car after he offered her a ride, died a few minutes later when she lost control of the vehicle and crashed into trees, police said.

The crash happened near the town of Hawkesbury — about 100 km (60 miles) northeast of Ottawa — after the man stopped to pick up 20-year-old Mandy Deschambeault.

“The male driver proceeded to step out of his vehicle momentarily at which point the female jumped in the driver seat, stealing the male person’s car,” local police said in a statement Monday.

“She proceeded to lose control of the … car, crossing the other lane hitting trees. The female was ejected from the vehicle and found to be without vital signs.”

Deschambeault was pronounced dead in hospital.

Holy Sh*t, an unbelieveable victory

This certainly bodes very well for those who value freedom & personal safety.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A federal appeals court overturned the District of Columbia’s long- standing handgun ban Friday, rejecting the city’s argument that the Second Amendment right to bear arms applied only to militias.

In a 2-1 decision, the judges held that the activities protected by the Second Amendment “are not limited to militia service, nor is an individual’s enjoyment of the right contingent” on enrollment in a militia.

The ban on owning handguns went into effect in 1976.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit also threw out the district’s requirement that registered firearms be kept unloaded, disassembled and under trigger lock.

gun free UK

Further proof that prohibition doesn’t work, from our neutered friends in the UK.

Labour has been accused of losing control of gun crime as new figures show a sharp rise in armed robberies.

Guns were used in 4,120 robberies last year - a 10% jump - including a 9% rise to 1,439 in the number of street robberies where guns were used.

There was also a rapid and unexplained increase in the number of times householders were confronted in their own homes by armed criminals. Residential firearms robberies show a 46% leap, a record 645 cases in England and Wales - up 204 on the previous year and four times the level recorded in 2000-01.

The figures come a day after two men armed with a replica gun robbed a Home Office worker on his way home after sharing a curry with Home Secretary John Reid. The 29-year-old civil servant was making his way home in Beckenham, Kent, shortly before midnight when he was attacked.

We hardly knew ya.
